Grey Goo

I had the pleasure of working in the Weta Design Team to contribute in the making of an awesome game called Grey Goo.  We worked with Six Foot and Petroglyph to design everything from tech, costume, creatures, to plant and fungus that inhabit the planet! It was an absolute pleasure to work on as we were really able to explore what this world looks like.

I mainly contributed to the look of the female Beta, which was based on Andrew Baker's design of the male counterpart (he's a clever guy, that one). The female Beta called "Hellen" in my design eventually had her name changed to Alin. You'll see some very initial costume designs, and ideas for secondary creatures and fungus' that were meant to be growing near thermal vents. Again, I had heaps of fun designing for fantastic clients, with some very talented artists on the Weta Team. The result? A DAMN cool looking game. The cut scenes look downright cinematic!

A piece I did when we were exploring ideas for creatures in The Hobbit; Battle of the Five Armies. It can be found in the Hobbit Chronicles; Battle of the Five Armies :) He's a chompy face.

Smaug Concept

This was a concept for Smaug that I had put forward early on in the Design phase. I had been thinking along the lines of Smaug potentially having a boney structure on his head to smash and burrow through tunnels under the mountains he resides in. Thus you'd see many broken bits of his hardened face. I'm so glad they went for a more classic dragon design in the end, but it was fun to have a play!
These images can be found in the book "Smaug; Unleashing the Dragon."  They're very small images in the book so I thought I'd post them here so the detail can be seen.

This first image is a close-up of the full body piece

Petroglyph's Grey Goo Design Work

This was a really cool project we worked on, I can't wait to see how the game turns out! This piece was a sculpt and paintover I did of a female Beta. I didn't do the awesome tattoo and costume design work, that was done by the fantastic Rebekah Tisch. So this was a collaborative piece :)
Here's the link to the article about this awesome game:

This is my Zbrush sculpt for the Azog on Warg Collectible from the Weta
Workshop line of collectibles for The Hobbit; An Unexpected Journey.
Well that was a mouthful!  I really enjoyed sculpting this piece and
having the opportunity to sculpt something with a lot of movement.
Check here to find more Weta Collectibles I've worked on:

Balin the Dwarf Collectible Zbrush sculpt

Hello!  In an earlier post I showed a picture of the Balin the Dwarf Collectible I sculpted for the Weta Workshop range of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey collectibles.  I mentioned that I would post pics of the actual Zbrush model, so here they are! I've also included some pics of the sculpt early on in the process.  It's been an amazing learning experience sculpting collectibles using Zbrush, and I have thoroughly enjoyed it. Here is a great article released by Weta Workshop about this model and Digital Sculpting at the Workshop:

A very early stage in the process, He doesn't look like Balin without the beard!

Looking a little more like himself, but still very early days.

An early version of the pose, he doesn't quite have the stern intent yet...

Weta Workshop Works

Well in May it will be my 6 year anniversary working at Weta Workshop! What a crazy ride it has been thus far.  I thought it would be a good time to just post a few pics of  works I've done in various departments.  There are some early ones from District 9 and more recently some work on The Hobbit; and Unexpected Journey.
I work with many amazingly talented individuals, and I'm proud to be apart of the creative process with them :)

I was apart of the team that sculpted Wikus' transformation prosthetic. It was then painted and applied by some very clever people!

This bad boy was designed by the one, the only Greg Broadmore- I was proud to model-make, mould and cast this baby.

Some early designs I did for Bofur, the last one being the approved design.  It barely looks like him without that iconic hat!

Good ol' Oin. I'm glad his little top knot braid made it in.

A design for Kili, back when he had blue eyes.

Sculpting Orc prosthetics and Dwarf hands golore.

I sculpted this Balin collectible in Zbrush. It was touched up after 3D printing and painted by some of the clever folk I work with.  More Hobbit collectibles I've sculped will be posted as they're released!  I hope to at some stage be able to post the Zbrush model turnarounds.

Pride

I did this several months ago but forgot to post it here!  I was wanting to physically represent certain human qualities.  This is my representation of pride or arrogance, as it usually isn't the first thing we see.  We see the beauty and confidence first and foremost, while arrogance becomes clear upon observing someone more carefully. I'd love to do more pieces based on different human qualities.

Old Man in pencil

I shamefully haven't been able to post anything in ages so I'm chucking up an old pencil piece I did years ago.  To ever so slightly diminish my shame.
